AMBOSS vs Quesmed: Is the Second One Worth It?

You already pay for Quesmed, AMBOSS keeps coming up, and a second subscription feels heavy when the first was a stretch.

This post works out what AMBOSS adds on top and what it doesn’t, for a UK clinical student, with the wider tool landscape for context.

AMBOSS vs Quesmed at a glance

Quesmed is a UK question bank built around the exams UK students actually sit. AMBOSS is a broader medical library with a question bank attached, built for the US market. They are not the same kind of purchase, so asking which is better misses the point if you already have Quesmed.

Quesmed calls itself "an all-in-one question bank" and runs from UCAT through UKMLA and clinical finals to PLAB, MSRA, MRCP and specialty interviews.

AMBOSS sells a library plus a question bank, plus a clinical reference tool and an AI study assistant called LiSA. On student tiers the standard membership includes the library and 50 questions a month, and the full question bank is a separate bundle.

The AMBOSS figures are US store prices in dollars on a page written for US students, and there is no UK AMBOSS store page to check them against, so a UK card may not see these numbers.

The Quesmed pound figures are Apple in-app purchase prices and may not match web checkout. They come from the UK App Store listing.

UK exam alignment

On UK exam alignment, Quesmed is the stronger fit if you're sitting UK papers. Per Quesmed's own product pages, it covers UKMLA and clinical or MLA content, PLAB 1 and 2, MRCP Part 1 and Part 2 with PACES video material, the MSRA and specialty interview banks, and it publishes mark schemes for OSCE, PACES and interviews, with UK guidelines emphasised in the FAQ. Day to day that means when you're revising at pace, stems read like the papers you sit, and guideline wording doesn't need translating. That isn't a knock on AMBOSS. Its US site frames the student bank around Step and Level exams, and it makes no UK or UKMLA claim, so you shouldn't expect UK style stems or phrasing.

What AMBOSS is genuinely better at

If you already pay for Quesmed, AMBOSS earns a second slot when you want a library-first reference. Every student tier includes unlimited library access, and the question bank is the add-on, which is unusual and the part worth paying for.

AMBOSS is a library plus question bank, with a clinical reference tool for fast, evidence-based, actionable information, and an AI study assistant called LiSA that turns questions and uploaded material into explanations and question sessions.

Its Qbank Bundle covers Step and Level exam questions across all levels, so it reaches beyond UK finals. The practical read is you open it when you half-know a mechanism and want the article, and it keeps working after finals and on the ward.

What Quesmed is genuinely better at

Quesmed is closer to the UK exam pathway. It runs from UCAT through UKMLA and clinical finals to PLAB, MSRA, MRCP and specialty interviews, with UK guidelines in its FAQ, and it publishes mark schemes for OSCE, PACES and interview stations, and sells its OSCE platform separately.

It is also kinder on a student budget, with the UK App Store showing the UKMLA bank at £39.99 a year and the bundle at £59.99 a year, both checked 13 August 2026, against $448 a year for the AMBOSS Qbank Bundle on the US store, checked 13 August 2026. Different stores and currencies, not like for like, but the gap is wide when you are deciding whether to add a second bill.

If you already have Quesmed, does AMBOSS add anything?

If you already have Quesmed, AMBOSS adds value only for certain problems. For most UK students, the second question bank is the wrong purchase, while the library can be the right one if your sticking point is understanding and recall rather than volume.

If your problem is 'I keep half-knowing the mechanism and re-reading the same explanation', AMBOSS’s library is an addition. The standard student tiers buy you the library, $19.99 a month billed monthly or $12.50 a month billed yearly on the US store as of 13 August 2026. You don’t need the Qbank Bundle for that.

If your problem is 'I want more UK-shaped questions', a second bank training to a different exam system is a poor fix. The AMBOSS Qbank requires the Qbank Bundle at $448 a year on the US store as of 13 August 2026.

If you’re heading for US exams, or want a reference you’ll still open as an F1, AMBOSS can earn its place on its own terms, not as a Quesmed top-up. In that case, weigh it against alternatives to UWorld.

The thing nobody says out loud. Two half-finished subscriptions beat nothing but lose to one finished one.

When to choose each one

Choose Quesmed if: Your next stop is UK finals or the UKMLA, you care about mark schemes and UK guideline wording, you want one platform that carries into PLAB, MSRA or MRCP, and you need to keep the annual spend tight.

Choose AMBOSS if: You want a reference library more than another bank, you are sitting or planning US exams, or you want something that still earns its keep after finals and on the ward. The student yearly tier is $12.50 a month billed yearly, US store, checked 13 August 2026.

Buy neither yet if: You are less than halfway through the bank you already own. Finishing one beats owning two.

The thing neither of them rehearses

Both train recognition. You read a stem, click, skim explanation, move on. Helps recall, not talking to a human or handling interruptions.

In UK finals OSCEs and PLAB, the task is the conversation under time pressure. Greet, open, clarify, summarise, safety net while patients are anxious.

Common questions

Is AMBOSS worth it if I already have Quesmed?

Probably, but only if you know the gap. In AMBOSS vs Quesmed, the AMBOSS library is the add-on that tends to earn its keep. A second question bank built around a different exam system usually won’t. The honest test is harsh, and helpful. If you can’t name what Quesmed isn’t doing for you, you’re not ready to buy.

How much does Quesmed cost?

Quesmed publishes no price on its website. The pricing page, FAQ and homepage all showed no figure when we checked on 13 August 2026. The UK App Store lists in-app purchase prices, £39.99 a year for the UKMLA question bank and £59.99 a year for the bundle, as of 13 August 2026. Check at the till and don’t trust a discount site.

Can I use AMBOSS for UKMLA?

Yes, you can, and the AMBOSS library is exam agnostic. The question bank is built around US Step and Level exams, and the US site made no mention of UKMLA content when we checked on 13 August 2026.
